Darband is the best persian restaurant in San Diego by far. It is not fancy like the two very expensive persian places in the Gaslamp on 4th & 5th ave, and the two in Del Mar/La Jolla, but the food tastes so much better. Darband is so much cheaper too and best of all they have complimentary tea! Be careful with the tea though. It is a bit strong. Pour a little less than half in your glass and fill up the rest with hot water.
The best food to share is the Soltani (which is a mix of Koobideh and barg (filet mignon). Persian's tend to eat a lot of rice with their dishes of lamb, beef, chicken etc., so expect plenty of long grain fluffy rice on your plate, making the dishes very filling.
For appetizers, I highly recommend the Cucumber/yogurt (masto khiar) or the shallots/yogurt (masto museer). You can dip the Lavash thin bread in these appetizers or put it on the side of your plate to mix in with the rice. So YUMMY!
If you are trying persian food for the first time. Try the koobideh. If you want something a little more fancy, try the barg (filet mignon).
Most of the dishes come with grilled tomatoes (mix this in with the rice). Remember to remove the skin first!
And if you are like me and love Greek food, the chances are you will fall in love with Persian food as well.
