Just a block away from Petco Park, Urban Basic Kitchen + Bar has become a very popular spot with the post/pre-game crowd. Their menu is small, but it's a testament to the philosophy of doing one thing and doing it well.
They serve Connecticut-style pizza -- thin, thin, thin, with a crisp finish along the outer crust. You have a choice of a white pizza (just parmesan and garlic) and a red pizza (with tomato sauce). They also have some unusual toppings, notably clams, mashed potatoes, bacon.
We got a white pizza with mashed potatoes, bacon, and onions. I've never had mashed potatoes on a pizza before, but it goes very well -- the creamy cheese and bacon complemented the potatoes very well. It was like a stuffed potato, just in a pizza shape.
The portions are surprisingly generous. We got a small pizza for about $11, and it could easily feed 3 people.

"Brick walls and exposed beams are de rigueur in the Gaslamp these days, but Basic makes the most of the old building it's housed in. From the thick wood-slab tables to the loungey daybeds, the easygoing neighborhood bar caters to comfort...."

"Basic Urban Kitchen is anything but and those brick walls and exposed beams aren't fooling anyone either. But like its sunlit industrial chic interior, the ball bark adjacent pizza spot is stock full of decent ironies: small pizza means huge, and "basic"..."

"Anyhow- the bar was a lot of fun- with this almost paper-thin pizza which comes out looking way too big, but is so thin that one large pizza between three works out just fine and makes a great addition to the many beers on tap...."
