Upon recovering from a flu, my first breath of fresh air made it felt like I have not been under the clear sky for more than a month! The mercury level has fallen over 20 degrees within the past 3 days, and my stomach just aches for something sweet and soothing, and there are very few things that could battle against this enchanted one.

The James Beard Foundation has just announced the winners for the 2009 James Beard Awards which honor some of America’s most respected restaurants, chefs, food authors, journalists, and restaurants. This year’s winners were chosen from an overall pool of over 15,000 entries from across the country.

Below are selections from the list of 2009 winners of the James Beard Awards which were held at Alice Tully Hall in New York City.

Grundlechive has made two interesting and informative videos which show various ways natural maple syrup is made; from the maple tree to the sugarhouse, which you can see below.

By the way, you might be surprised to learn that you can actually make your own maple syrup with as little as two trees. There’s a great post about the process (and the benefits) of small scale maple syrup making here on the Mamaliga Food Blog.

Also, if you’d like to see how sugar cane syrup is traditionally made in South Carolina, you won’t want to miss this video.
