It seems the desserts I crave the most during these winter months are those served warm. Ohhhhh yes… warm, gooey, and delicious creations that allow each and every muscle in your body to relax once you start devouring the goodness.
I’m going to concentrate on two traditionally served-warm desserts today. Self saucing pudding and bread pudding. Two highly underrated desserts in my humble opinion.
Let’s start with self saucing puddings.. what is there not to like here? They are usually extremely easy to put together. And the end product is usually a warm, moist cake with it’s own decadent sauce just waiting to be discovered underneath! It is true though, a self saucing pudding is best served minutes out of the oven. This dessert won’t stay “saucy” for very long as the cake will absorb the sauce, but even then.. a day or two later, a spoonful zapped in the microwave for 30 seconds then topped with a bit of warm cream or a scoop of ice cream and you’ve got yourself a totally different variation with minimal effort. PERFECT for winter nights when you want something sweet, delicious and warm.
Here are a few of my most favorite recipes created by some very talented bakers in our blogging world.. We’ll start with a recipe for self saucing pudding by Jeanne of Cook Sister!. This blog is a wealth of fantastic recipes and delightful reading. Her Apple Caramel Self-Saucing Pudding gets me salivating every time I think about it. It’s apples and caramel, kids! What’s not to love, eh?
Secondly there is Bill Granger’s Chocolate Self-Saucing Pudding featured on Leites Culinaria - another fabulous place to find some really wonderful recipes. Bill Granger is a popular chef and food writer based in Australia, but known internationally for his recipes.. and by the looks of this recipe, I can see why.
Finally, there is my hubby’s contribution.. made especially for me one icy winter night, this is a simple and quick way to get a lil sunshiney warm fix in the dead of winter. His pudding was found in one of my Kraft recipe magazines and although he didn’t know exactly what self-saucing pudding was, he knew by the photo that it had to be good. And it was! I was very, very impressed! Go check out my post about what a good man (when he’s not mocking me and my blogging habit) I’ve got, here.
Next up.. bread puddings.. something I’d never heard of a few years ago, but was introduced to me by my favorite Gracie.. I mean, Peabody of Culinary Concoctions by Peabody. Her Croissant Bread Pudding is to die for. Seriously. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve made this recipe since Christmas of 2006. Everyone who has tried it has fallen instantly in love. Creamy and crispy.. sweet and buttery.. truly the epitome.
Want to start that comfort early on a wintery morning? I’m all for that.. and my choice is my partner, the awe-inspiring Ivonne of Cream Puffs in Venice and her recipe for Lemony Bread Pudding French Toast. Hello? Talk about decadence and comfort all rolled up into one.
of comfort and warm fuzzy evenings curled up under your favorite blanket.
Finally on my list is Alanna of Kitchen Parade and A Veggie Venture fame. I’ve fallen in love with this blog for Alanna has given me so many wonderful recipes for awesome veggies. SO GOOD! But for this article, I am highlighting her Pumpkin Bread Pudding. You might think Autumn when you think pumpkin, but I can assure you.. this bread pudding will hit the spot on any freezing winter night.. not to mention on any warm and breezy summer evening! It’s THAT good!
So that’s right, kids.. when you are cravin’ something sweet, delicious and warming - don’t forget about the Self-Saucing Pudding or the Bread Pudding.. after one spoonful, you’ll be amazed that you haven’t been making either of these desserts over and over throughout the years. Trust me.
xoxo
