New categories to let you explore new recipes

We have introduced some new categories to help people find recipes that wouldn’t have normally seen with the basic search. We were concerned that the search tends to favor the same sites and that people weren’t getting a good picture of all the recipes that are out there. We have created categories to help you explore some of the smaller sites, including several great food blogs. Here’s a list of the new categories:

  • Big sites - This will include only recipes from the big cooking mega-sites like (AllRecipes, Epicurious, Food Network, …)
  • Boutique sites - This category is dedicated to the less well-known sites out there. It includes some authentic Asian cooking sites. This is the place to look for something out of the mainstream.
  • Food bloggers - The category includes recipes from the food blogging community. Food bloggers are producing some of the best food articles filled with detailed instructions and gorgeous photos.
  • Magazine recipes - This category includes all the recipes from the major cooking magazines.
  • Professional chef recipes - If you want to make sure that the recipe you use is blessed by a professional chef (whether from a TV show, cooking magazine, or a major restaurant), then you should use this category.
  • Rated recipes - Only returns recipes that have been given a rating.
  • Well Rated recipes - Only returns recipes that have been given a good rating.
  • Celebrity chef - This category includes only recipes that were created by TV celebrity chefs.

In addition to the above categories, you can see recipes from a lot of the major cooking magazines (plus Food Network):

Coastal Living
Eating Well
Gourmet/Bon Appetit
Fine Cooking
Food Network
Parenting Magazine
Real Simple
Saveur
Southern Living
Sunset Magazine

  2. Hi, Kirk!

I believe the last current total is about 263,000 recipes. Most of the sites have just a few hundred recipes (or less) so it takes quite a few of the little sites to add to the whole total. I think the sites that we index that have the most recipes are chef2chef.net, RecipeZaar, and RecipeSource. I guess when you have so many users contributing recipes, your database gets big pretty fast. The professional sites like Food Network and Epicurious don’t grow quite as quickly.

I’m hoping that we can reach half a million by the end of winter.

  3. There are a lot of travel sites which also publish recipes that can’t be found anywhere else. Take a look at Epiculinary’s.
